東京カテドラル聖マリア大聖堂 Tōkyō Katedoraru Sei Maria Daiseidō

St. Mary’s Cathedral, Tokyo was designed by Kenzo Tange in 1963. From the exterior, it has a swooping roof and from the aerial view, one would distinctively notice that the architect was inspired by the crucifix. Kenzo Tange was highly praised for his work on the gymnasium he designed for the 1964 Summer Olympics. Highly influenced by Le Cobusier and the founder of the movement which he later described as Structuralism, he became well-known for the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office Building.

Although the cathedral is the firm seat of the Catholics in Japan, it remains fairly secluded and service runs only in Japanese which really doesn’t attract much foreigners to come and visit this wonderful building. But to its on credit it becomes one of those hidden gems in Tokyo.

It’s a truly magnificent building which needs to be seen with you own eyes.
